Since When is Femme Feminine?

20.06.2005

Jennifer Vanasco’s piece in the Washington Blade proclaims the "death of femme…."

Yeah………right!

So many morsels of junk leap out at the reader I find it hard to begin….

First we have the "femme is feminine" equation I thought got put to bed by the likes of Joan Nestle and my pal, Anna Camilleri in Brazen Femme…guess Jennifer missed those books…

Then we have the whole, "butches are now trannybois…"  Really?

Since when does gender progressive in any particular direction?

Jennifer presents us with incisive questions she learned….where?

Are femmes not trangressive enough in our new gender queer era? Are they not playful enough with gender roles? Are tranny bois and androgynous lesbians worried that femmes are a trap that would force them into more traditional butch roles? Or is it really that young lesbians are simply not attracted to women who are feminine?

Her near conclusion though grabs me.

The gender queer contingent among lesbians are our current taste-makers; where they go, so go we all.

Love it!  Gender queer as a subset of the lesbian community!!!!!

Jennifer I got news for you:  Gender queers live in their own world and have their own culture separate from lesbian culture.

Newsflash:  Gender queer folks’s world does not revolve around the so-called lesbian community (what ever the hell that means).
