Peterson Toscano - Fashion Activist
21.07.2005Peterson Toscano practices what he preaches. Recently asked to perform his piece Talkin Trash in the Homo No Halfway House, Peterson defied the Grand Hotel’s (the same hotel where Somewhere in Time was filmed) satorial dictum of boys = pants and girls = skirts by wearing this scrumptious ensemble.
Fashion Activism strikes a pose!
As I shared with Peterson in an email, I think I’m being a fashion activist as I strive to dress well everyday, since I see so many rich, monied guys dressed like slobs.
But truthfully folks, I’m terrified to wear a skirt or a dress (and a dream/nightmare last night about my girl self with long Jackie-O hair fighting with someone over a new ‘do. Truth is stranger than fiction).
And that probably makes more of a conformist than I care to admit. I’m not sure it matters anymore when I tell people I wanted to look like the GQ guys. Then, with a high voice and long hair, it sounded radical. Now, with a bald head and a nice guy belly, it sounds like wishful thinking.
What I can, and will, do is cheer on the likes of Peterson every way I can. From me Peterson gets two Bravas and one Bravo for acknowledging his white male priviledge made it a whole lot easier to act the Fashion Activist.
Plus he ends his post with one of the all time coolest quotes from St. Francis of Assisi (kind of a queer guy himself, yes?):
Preach the Gospel at all times, when necessary, use words
Fashion Activism = Spiritual Practice. Namaste.
