May 3, 2006 – 10:10 pmGov. Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day on Friday (May 5) in honor of Army Sergeant Matthew A. Webber of Kalamazoo who died April 27 in Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Flags should return to full-staff Saturday, May 6.
Sergeant Webber, 23, died as the result of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations in Habbaniyah, Iraq, on November 21, 2005. He was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), Saginaw, Michigan.
