Core Work

May 9, 2006 – 12:01 am

I move from my momentum. second person: I move from my core.

Core work, in yoga, focuses on strengthing the upper and lower abs as well as the obliques, the muscles running along the sides of our bodies.

Head stands requires strong shoulders and obliques.  These side muscles keep a person upright.

I muscle my way into headstands.  With one leg up, I kick my second leg, using the momemtum to achieve a headstand.

Not bad, really.  But in muscling my way into a headstand, I’m neither in control of my body nor my speed.  I also run the risk of moving past vertical, right onto my ass!

In moving from my core, I can achieve a kind light upward flow in complete conrol of my legs and my momentum.

This is why we speak of core work as doing that which is most important and centering.  From our core we can work hard without falling or injury.  From our core we remain centered.
