Cleaning House

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Cleaning House is not a metaphor for simplifiing my life.  Not today.  Today it is simly cleaning my house.  What a bummer, but it has to be done.  I'd really rather be working on my novel or having coffe (chai tea since I don't do coffe) with a friend. But it must be one.  And it is an accomplishment when it is finished.  I have clean sheets, clean towels, clean clothes, clean dishes and surfaces.  Now I can light candles and incense and get back to writing.  Maybe it's not so bad after all.Maybe it is a metaphor after all.  On an international level, we have a lot of house cleaning to do.  I'm sure you've all heard the saying "An eye for an eye just leaves everyone blind".  The way we are handling situations may have worked in ancient times when there was plenty of land to move into (read to steal).  But it's a full world now.  We need to reevaluate and get rid of the methods that don't work.  If we can do that, we'll have a clean slate to work with.  Well, maybe not clean, but cleaner.  Remember that smart man who told us to "start where we are"?  Chop wood, carry water.  Today I cleaned my house and maybe my mind a little.  This afternoon, I can send some emails to my members of congress, encouraging them to help clean up our act, nationally and internationally.  Who knows what tomorrow will lead me to do?

May You Live in Interesting Times

My life is now consumed by kerning, justification, leading, hyphenation, space, font proportionality, drop caps, style sheets, et cetera, et cetera. When I hear about the ghastly attacks in Lebanon, some part of my mind recoils in horror and lashes out in rage and then another part thinks, "so should I hyphenate trans non-trans, or use a slash mark for greater clarity?"Strange.  Very Strange Indeed. To be consumed by minutiae when part of the world is going straight to hell in a federal express package.

And While We’re On the Topic - Em Versus En Dashes

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Okay folks.I need your feedback.  When do you use en versus em dashes?I inclined to:use the en dash between numbers, i.e. 35-45, etc.; anduse the em dash between phrases meant to set apart the phrase between the dashes - where I really want to make my point - as important.Am I correct?  Or do I just pick one and use it consistently throughout the text?

I don’t know how editors do it….

(with a nod to our own editor Jay)I'm working on several pieces right now.  It's always been  my goal to submit one piece a month for publication.  I have two going for July and one for August and a couple chapters of my book i'm editing.Well, editing probably isn't the correct word.  You see, I  fall in love with my own words and have a horrible time butchering them and rearranging them.  I can do minor changes, but I don't see the big picture of rewriting yet.  Guess that's why I haven't been published more than a handful of times!Anyhow, a big thanks to Jay for what he does for writers...giving them a platform to express themselves and the editing to help them sound articulatee.  Now  if I was just a self organizing man....LOL

Read My Lips: Hate Language is Violent

The World Cup playoffs [1] were very much a part of my travels in Ireland and London. England's game against Portugal neared completion as we exited our huge red bus (14-seater, 10 feet tall, driven by yours truly on the _left_ side of the road naturally), crowds roared from the several pubs forming a perimeter around the parking lot in Ennis [2], Ireland. "I'm going in to find out what's going," one of my travel companions said. She came out a few minutes later with the ten and twelve year old tagging behind. one of my favorite jokes

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Do you know who Butch Cassidy was? Hopalong's rarely spoken of daughter!I have a question for readers out there....I'm doing research for a novel.  In "polite" gay circles, is "butch" a category that is recognized, perhaps silently, or is the term used?  I'm not talking about "butch" the adjectivee, "I feel so butch today, I changed my own oil" But "butch" the self named identity, not a role.  Same thing with femme.  I'm working on a novel and would love to hear what is spoken of in your community...thanks!
