Don’t Save

August 2, 2006 – 8:02 am

Self-Organizing Men is inching ever closer to publication! Layout is done.  Authors are reviewing their pieces one last time.

One of the things I realize about myself these last few weeks is how much I have saved things up for some future time.  You know, like "Someday I’m gonna really have the life I want."

Funny how someday never arrived. Someday was a day I had to make for myself.

I realize now there is no value in saving any of myself for a future time.  Do it now.  Five minutes from now death may be chomp my ass right off.

  2. It took me many years to realize the same thing on another level: “Someday all my housework and chores will be caught up and THEN I can do x, y, z [inert seemingly 'trivial' leisure activity here]…”

I guess we’re only “caught up” once we die - unless, of course, we learn to live with a certain amount of ambivalence and recognize that eventually death ends even the most grandiose plans for everyone.

Carpe carp! Or something like that…

  3. Once again, Jay, you’ve hit the nail on the head. “Someday” never comes. I learned that last november doing “Nanowrimo” the national novel writing month . (see their webiste for more info.) Where you challange yourself to write a novel in 30 days. 50,000 words in a month. And i did it! So now i’ve started on my second novel and things are progressing nicely…someday is here!

  4. i too recently came to this same conclusion and have been working to make someday today. it feels good. i think it was benjamin franklin who said, “don’t put off for tomorrow that which you can do today.” words to take seriously.

i’m really glad to hear the book is coming together. soon enough you’ll have a new site to go along with the new book.

  5. SO TRUE, jay. i’ve started to think about this, too. it feels so much better when you’re not waiting for it to start, right?
