Self-Organizing Men is Now on Sale
September 6, 2006 – 9:15 amSelf-Organizing Men: Conscious Masculinities in Time and Space
The roles of paradox and incoherence in the construction and maintenance of the masculine self remains unexplored in both gender and men’s studies. Self-Organizing Men - through poetry, visual images, prose and humor - seeks to understand how paradox and the failure to adhere to a unitary self creates opportunities for sustained connections to sexual love, the penis, childhood, and vulnerability as well as disrupts traditional transsexual narratives of masculinity and the gendered body.

Thanks Jay - FYI last evening the BBC had a discussion around homosexuality in Africa. Jay this was the most depressing reactionary repressive discussion I have heard in a long time. Apart from about 4 activists including myself, all the emails, sms messages and phone -ins, all of them were vehemently anti-homosexual homophobic, transphobic bigoted etc etc. It was horrible. In my country it is against the law to even advocate for LGBT rights or support any gay or lesbian individual or group let alone dare to come out and say you are gay. Uganda is following closely so in short we are going backwards instead of forwards with these new repressive set of legislations. Today I just feel shattered but tomorrow you just have to get up and start again, for those at home life is mostly bitter.

sokari,
this situation is deplorable, and frankly, exists, in part, because a large portion of the U.S. tolerates either a similar world view held by the homophobes you list or are horribly homophobic and are afraid allowing a person to say they are gay will lead to-gasp!-marriage.
Given the degree of unexamined internalized homophobia that exists within our national leaders (notice how many of them fell over Gore and Dean and the Democrats, who continue to sell LGBT people down the ol’ political river) we cannot mount any kind of moral outrage at how our people are being treated in various countries in Africa.
