Transsexuality is a Crime Per Se

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

"I do not feel he has the integrity, nor the trust, nor the respect, nor the confidence to continue as the city manager of the city of Largo," said Commissioner Mary Black, who led the drive to fire Stanton. Stanton's crime? Embezzlement? Larceny? Murder? Transsexuality [1]. [1] http://365gay.com/Newscon07/02/022707largo.htm

We’re All Natural Born Cyborgs

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I've started creating multi-panel cartoons, which I then move into windows movie maker. I guess they turn into wordpictures. Natural Born Cyborgs is my first attempt to discuss feminism through the works of Donna Haraway and other historian and social scientists studying cybernetic theory. Of greatest influence, of course, is Donna Haraway's A Manifesto for Cyborgs [1]  as well as Andy Clark's Natural Born Cyborgs [2]. This is what happens when you upload podpress to your blog and start reading some out-there feminist theory. Suggestions? My First Reading at a Bookstore

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

I had a lovely time at Common Language Books on Saturday. The owners, Keith and Martin, attended, as well as M. and two staff at Common Language. The discussions were candid, pertinent, and refreshing. My hosts provided drinks and snacks while the space itself is unparalleled in how it maximizes space efficiencies. I was also happy to meet M. and find out he works at UM, too. Connecting with my readers is very important. Without them, I wouldn't have a book in any true sense of the word. I've included a podcast that is about twenty-five minutes of my talk this past Saturday. Feminist discussions took a much more central role on Saturday than they did at my first talk at UM in November 2006. I prefer breaking up the reading of the introduction. I also liked the intimate setting. It's better to ask for the smallest space possible when speaking/reading. Five people in a place that seats nine is better than five in a space that seats twenty. From now on, I'm asking for the smallest room available. Then I can say I gathered a SRO crowd.

My First Radio Interview

Friday, February 9th, 2007

I had the good fortune to be interviewed by Dan and Gabe on the longest-running queer radio show in the U.S., Closets Are For Clothes. Broadcast by WCBN, an entirely free-radio format, the show has been in existence for over thirty years. In addition to me, Dan and Gabe also brought along Keith Orr, owner of Common Language Books [1] in Ann Arbor. Keith has been an early and staunch supporter of Self-Organizing Men and Homofactus Press. We're already brainstorming better ways to distribute print-on-demand books to independent bookstore owners around the country. This interview is long, and I don't actually start speaking until about minute 17 or so. But to gain a context for the show, the hosts, and some of my early comments, listen to the whole thing. We had some great exchanges about complex masculinity, digital publishing, and filling niche markets. There are some statements I made I don't agree with now but interviewing, like writing, gets better with reviewing and editing. I've had the most success playing this file by clicking on the Play Now button. The other two take awhile to load. And I'll be reading at Common Language Books this Saturday, tomorrow, at 4 pm. If you're in Ann Arbor, or within driving distance, I'd love to chat with you in person. Call me at 734.635.1404 if you want to meet up afterwards. [1] http://www.glbtbooks.com

Moving Servers, Lost Posts, and Organization

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Thanks to the vastly intelligent vegankid we have successfully moved all our blogs over to dreamhost, the most bomb web host in the universe. In the process, only one post got lost, the one where I shared that my cartoons have been picked up by Between the Lines newspaper here in Detroit. We live in interesting times. The thing I did for free now pays me money! What is also interesting is moving into a maintenance phase in my life. Maintenance used to mean boring. Now I'm telling myself it means slow and steady. The last year has brought tremendous changes, chaos, and wonderful people. Now it's time for me to settle in and tend to the seeds I've planted.
