My First Reading at a Bookstore

13.02.2007

I had a lovely time at Common Language Books on Saturday. The owners, Keith and Martin, attended, as well as M. and two staff at Common Language. The discussions were candid, pertinent, and refreshing. My hosts provided drinks and snacks while the space itself is unparalleled in how it maximizes space efficiencies. I was also happy to meet M. and find out he works at UM, too. Connecting with my readers is very important. Without them, I wouldn’t have a book in any true sense of the word.

I’ve included a podcast that is about twenty-five minutes of my talk this past Saturday.

Feminist discussions took a much more central role on Saturday than they did at my first talk at UM in November 2006. I prefer breaking up the reading of the introduction. I also liked the intimate setting. It’s better to ask for the smallest space possible when speaking/reading. Five people in a place that seats nine is better than five in a space that seats twenty. From now on, I’m asking for the smallest room available. Then I can say I gathered a SRO crowd.
