Ms. H. shared with me last night that I dress better now than when we first began dating. As I've assumed a more public role over the last two years, I've come to believe that appearance - be it clothing, blog design, handwriting - really means a great deal for me.
So I've been devouring behance [1] of late. I love their swag [2]. And today's post seemed to speak to me.
"In essence, your productivity as a creative professional requires that you create an advertisement of you. Not a literal advertisement, but rather a concise message, a repetition of your goals, and a collective display of all you have accomplished and learned in the pursuit of your passion."
Whether it is your virtual or physical portfolio, day-to-day correspondence, or your actual physical appearance, constant effort is a necessity; this may be as simple as running a spell-check or making sure you're wearing clean socks or as complex as redesigning your entire website. For some, these things may come more naturally than for others -- in theory, writers should be able to edit, and designers able to create portfolios -- but all too often the adage "a dentist's children have the worst teeth" rings true.
"You are your own PR agent, and you must manage the opportunities and risks throughout every interaction, communication, career move, and decision." (Read more [3].)
I sometimes use the word style rather than presentation. But whether it's style or presentation, the look of what we do and the look of how we do it, really, really matters. Most of all to ourselves.

I've always felt a bit of a disconnect between this blog and other parts of my life, especially my book, Self-Organizing Men [1].
I seem more dedicated to various processes than to things like Theory! or Current Events!. Then in a blast of I-don't-know-what I realized I wanted to include the phrase self-organizing in the title of this blog. Since I seem happiest when I am digesting all the incoming bits of information through questions like "how does this affect me?" or "why do I do x this way and not that way?" self-organizing as both a life principle and a title seems appropriate.
And I am a man, most of the time ;-)

I have been receiving tremendous visual goodies from my new pal Neil Marcus [4], performance artist, poet and dancer extraordinaire. I had the chance to perform with him here in Ann Arbor at the Center for Independent Living. All I will say is that he is a much better dancer than I.
The drawing is a black background with white, hand-drawn images of a people in wheelchairs playing basketball, with someone sitting on their lap, walking the dog, driving a car, living their life.
The artist is Neil Marcus.

Busy-ness: About 80%. Completed a lot of detailed tasky items yesterday (40+ emails). Today: bigger projects.
Listening to: WEMU, one of the last jazz stations in the U.S. (Alas, would that all radio be like CBC radio...).
Reading: A Fan's Notes, by Frederick Exley.
Contemplating: Creating a trans change movement based on personal self-determination rather than privacy.
Dreading: My dentist appointment this afternoon (8 cavities! Ladies and Gentleman).
Welcoming: My birthday this Friday, where the lovely Ms. H. and I shall partake of many free meals proffered by local eateries on a patron's birthday.

Homofactus Press is seeking about 10-20 people for a pilot project. We want to explore using text messages/SMS to send out marketing blasts, calls for submissions, etc. using text messages.
If you are interested in participating in this pilot project, please email jay dot sennett at gmail dot com with your cell phone number. You must be able to send and receive text messages. There is no cost to you other than what your carrier charges for text messages.
Currently this pilot project is good in the U.S. and Canada only.
