Julia Serano [1] takes the white trannie boys to town [2]. And well done I might add. I'm so tired of trans men braying about how they don't have any male privilege. Then rush into women-only spaces on their genitals/history. Then ten minutes later boo-hoo about how X doesn't see them as a man. Isn't amazing how some transmen, despite their proclaimed female histories, can make everything all about them, which is exactly what cisgender (bio-men for those new to the topic) men do?!
A recognition of trans-misogyny/trans-masculinism -- both within queer and feminist settings, and in society at large -- has led many trans women and trans male allies to critique the growing numbers of trans men who, despite their physical transitions and the fact that they now live as men, still feel entitled to inhabit lesbian and women's spaces. Such individuals will often justify their continued presence in such spaces by citing their female history, or claiming that they don't feel 100 percent like a "man" (even though their appearance definitely reads "man"). Such claims reinforce the popular misconception that transsexual gender identities should not be taken seriously, and thus has had a direct negative impact on trans women's inclusion in these same spaces (emphasis mine).
My only wish for Julia is that she apply her enormous insight into gender to race and gender. Her insights can only be made more nuanced - and fruitful I might add - if she were to add the adjective white before every mention of female, feminine, male, masculine, trans, etc.

Ms. H. shared with me last night that I dress better now than when we first began dating. As I've assumed a more public role over the last two years, I've come to believe that appearance - be it clothing, blog design, handwriting - really means a great deal for me.
So I've been devouring behance [1] of late. I love their swag [2]. And today's post seemed to speak to me.
"In essence, your productivity as a creative professional requires that you create an advertisement of you. Not a literal advertisement, but rather a concise message, a repetition of your goals, and a collective display of all you have accomplished and learned in the pursuit of your passion."
Whether it is your virtual or physical portfolio, day-to-day correspondence, or your actual physical appearance, constant effort is a necessity; this may be as simple as running a spell-check or making sure you're wearing clean socks or as complex as redesigning your entire website. For some, these things may come more naturally than for others -- in theory, writers should be able to edit, and designers able to create portfolios -- but all too often the adage "a dentist's children have the worst teeth" rings true.
"You are your own PR agent, and you must manage the opportunities and risks throughout every interaction, communication, career move, and decision." (Read more [3].)
I sometimes use the word style rather than presentation. But whether it's style or presentation, the look of what we do and the look of how we do it, really, really matters. Most of all to ourselves.

It's All It's Cracked Up to Be [2], originally uploaded by Jay Sennett [3].
This gender thing isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Really.
I've started spinning regularly these past few weeks. The hard pumping heart, not a gender, becomes the transcendent reality.
Rock on.

I have been receiving tremendous visual goodies from my new pal Neil Marcus [4], performance artist, poet and dancer extraordinaire. I had the chance to perform with him here in Ann Arbor at the Center for Independent Living. All I will say is that he is a much better dancer than I.
The drawing is a black background with white, hand-drawn images of a people in wheelchairs playing basketball, with someone sitting on their lap, walking the dog, driving a car, living their life.
The artist is Neil Marcus.

Plastic Pops [2]

This cartoon was in the final rounds of my book Self-Organizing Men [4] but ultimately got cut.
The basis of this cartoon required some understanding both of the environmental impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals as well as a belief that science is as socially-constructed. I thought at the time that most american readers wouldn't grasp the finer points of this cartoon.
I've found that folks who handily declare that gender is socially constructed come up short when it comes to science. Klew phone. Scientific knowledge can and does change over time.
Don't believe me? How about Ptolemy? Galileo's house arrest for daring to undermine the Ptolemaic worldview? Newton? Einstein? Quantum Mechanics?
Einstein himself thought quantum mechanics a load of crap. "God doesn't play dice with the Universe." In fact, god probably does play dice, alot.
So how is that biology is exempt from the same changes, heresies and disruptions as other branches of science? And why are we so invested in locating gender in our biology? Intertwined with these questions is another one: why does stating that gender can be self-determined act astonish and frighten some people?

Stupid [2]

[The cartoon reads I used to be really smart. Then I started testosterone and...Wow! Look at the buns on that one...]

The fascinating history of this logo. When we were in the proofing and discussing stages of logo development, most people of color really dug the above logo. Most white people preferred a more traditional publisher look. In fact, some white people felt that logo to be the cheesiest thing since Velveeta.
And we wonder why there are such divides between white people and people of color....
